A Note on He Shou Wu
It is important to note that proper processing of He Shou Wu can significantly reduce its impact on the GI tract, particularly the liver. While raw He Shou Wu may cause nausea and diarrhea, it is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for specific detoxification protocols. The decoction form, on the other hand, is used for tonifying the kidneys and liver, supplementing essence and blood, blackening hair, strengthening bones and muscles, and eliminating dampness in the body.*
He Shou Wu is typically used to treat various liver diseases, but cases of potential HSW-induced hepatotoxicity resulting in severe drug-induced liver injury have been reported. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, He Shou Wu is a multicomponent synergistic system used for strengthening and detoxification. However, it produces biphasic effects, which means it can cause both liver injury and liver protection.*
Taking He Shou Wu at a regular small dose, along with complementary liver supportive herbs, greatly reduces its potential hepatotoxicity while enhancing its vitality effects in the body.*
