Toothpaste, Tooth Powder or Tablets: Which One Is Right for You?

toothpaste-tablets-powder

For a long time, the toothpaste aisle came down to one question: which flavour of tube? These days you can brush with a paste, a powder, a tablet or a clay-based jar, and each one feels a little different.

They all clean your teeth. What changes is the texture, the packaging, the ritual and how easily they travel. Here is a simple guide to each format and who tends to like it.

Tubes: The Easy Switch

A tube is what most of us grew up with, and it’s the easiest way to move to a natural formula. You squeeze, you brush, nothing else changes. RiseWell and Georganics both make hydroxyapatite toothpastes in tubes, and Biocidin’s Dentalcidin Oral Microbiome Toothpaste is a good one to look at if the mouth microbiome is your focus. Curaprox’s Enzycal Zero Fluoride tube is also an option if you want a fluoride-free formula.

Best for: anyone who wants a familiar routine, kids, and people who are making their first switch.

Jars: Rich, Botanical and a Bit Luxurious

Jar toothpastes are thicker and more botanical in feel. Living Libations has a whole range, including Happy Gums Clay, Triple Mint Enamelizer, Neem Enamelizer, Frankincense Fresh (their gentle option for sensitive teeth) and Wintergreen Clean with activated charcoal. Bliss Energetics offers its Super Mineral Primal Toothpaste in Mint and Cake Batter, for people who like their toothpaste to taste like dessert. Georganics also has a fluoride-free Peppermint toothpaste in a glass jar.

Best for: people who enjoy the ritual, like glass packaging, and want something more botanical than minty.

Tablets: The Travel-Friendly Choice

Tablets are the format that sounds strangest and then wins everybody over. You chew a tablet, wet your brush, and brush as normal. There is nothing to spill, nothing to leak in your wash bag and no tube to throw away. Georganics’ Mineral Toothpaste Tablets come in English Peppermint (120 tablets per jar) and in Activated Charcoal.

Best for: travelling, weekend bags, and anyone trying to cut down on plastic.

Powders: A Little Goes a Long Way

A tooth powder is a fine mineral powder you dip a damp brush into. It lasts a long time, because a small amount goes a long way, and it’s a quiet favourite for people who like simple things. Georganics has a Mineral Toothpaste Powder in Peppermint, and Living Libations has Mint Condition Mineral Tooth Powder, Tooth Truth Powder Polish and Perfect Pearl Powder.

Best for: minimalists, people who like a long-lasting jar, and anyone who wants a gently polishing feel.

Polishes and Scrubs: The Occasional Extra

Polishes are made for occasional use, in addition to your everyday toothpaste. Anima Mundi’s Tooth Polish is fluoride free, and Bliss Energetics has an Herbal Blend Tooth Polish and a Whitening Mint Tooth Scrub. Always follow the directions for how often to use them.

Best for: people who already have a daily toothpaste they love and want something extra.

A Quick Way to Choose

If you want zero learning curve, go for a tube. If you love a ritual, try a jar. For travel, tablets are the easy answer, and if you like to keep things minimal, a powder will last you for months. Anyone considering a hydroxyapatite formula can read more in our guide to hydroxyapatite toothpaste.

Switching Without the Fuss

Start with one product and give it a week before you decide. The texture will feel different from what you’re used to, and that’s normal. Brush for two minutes whichever format you pick, and remember that no toothpaste replaces flossing or a regular dental check-up.
