What exactly is
The term self-care can be described in German as Selbstfürsorge. Self-care describes the nurturing, caring treatment of one’s own body and psyche. The main point here is to perceive one’s own needs in a considerate and loving way and to pursue them.
A spa retreat or a hiking holiday can be nice rituals, but in general, self-care should be practised every day as a way of life. We’ll tell you how to do that below.
Why are self-care routines so important?
Often the stress of everyday life engulfs us and there is hardly any time left for our own needs. Lunch is skipped because an important meeting is coming up, the relaxing evening on the couch falls through because your best friend has problems and wants to make a phone call, and you don’t make it to bed until after midnight because the “quick check of emails” led to a two-hour work session.
We all know this and this is where self-care comes in. It is important that we learn to give space to our needs. But how do we do that?

#1: Honour your body
Loving and honouring your body is probably the highest form of self-care. It is so complex and you should show gratitude to it every day. After all, it carries you through life and ensures that you can experience all the things you want.
With a healthy and balanced diet consisting of lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, wholemeal products and high-quality protein (for example from pulses or fish), you show your body how important it is to you. “You are what you eat” – this saying is no coincidence. So always provide yourself with the best foods. Be worth it.
To keep your body healthy and fit, you should move it regularly. Whether it’s a walk or jog in the fresh air, a challenging cardio or strength workout, or a relaxing yoga session, exercise should be on your calendar at least three times a week. And you’ll see: Once you’ve established a sports routine, you’ll notice right away if you’ve skipped a session.
Restful, adequate sleep (at least 7 hours per night) should also be part of your self-care routines. During the night, the body regenerates and ensures that you are fit and efficient during the day.
#2: Say no more often
Of course, you should not reject everything on principle. However, we should all learn to say no more often when we really mean it. Who hasn’t experienced it? A colleague comes around the corner with a request for which you have neither the nerve nor the time. But you do it anyway so as not to offend her. Pay attention to that in the future. This often happens unconsciously. So the next time someone asks you to do something, listen to yourself to see if you really want to do it. If this would degenerate into stress and your needs would suffer, a nice refusal is perfectly legitimate. Because: A no to someone else is always a yes to yourself.
#3: Turn off your mobile phone
You just wanted to check your emails and half an hour later you find yourself in the endless Instagram timeline – it’s probably happened to all of us. The apps on our smartphones are programmed in such a way that it’s incredibly difficult for us to break through automatic patterns. So switch off your smartphone more often. You will see: You will have much more precious time for yourself.
#4: Practice gratitude
Nothing puts you in a better mood than focusing on the things in your life that you are grateful for. So make it a self-care routine, for example, to keep a gratitude journal every evening. You will see: It’s an even better way to sleep.
#5: Do nothing more often
When was the last time you sat on the couch and stared holes in the air? In our digital world, we are actually constantly exposed to stimuli. This makes it all the more important that we regularly take conscious breaks from it all. Make it a routine to just sit there for 10 minutes at least once a day. At first, this will seem incredibly unproductive and boring. However, you will soon see how much more creativity and focus you gain from such small breaks in thinking.
#6: Do your to-dos
It sounds like work… But quite right: self-care is work. Everyday to-dos like laundry, cleaning etc. may not seem like the ultimate self-care rituals. But we all know the wonderful feeling of having ticked off those pesky to-dos. So make sure you never let your to-do list get too long.
#7: Do something good for yourself on a regular basis
Whether it’s a massage, a manicure appointment or simply a long walk in the fresh air: treat yourself to something nice on a regular basis. You can reserve a fixed time slot in your calendar for this. Reward yourself, because you deserve it.
