According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, a plant’s tastes serve as energy signatures that reveal the specific medicinal properties of that plant. Its five flavors—sweet, bitter, salty, sour, and pungent—directly indicate that it is incredibly therapeutic and all-encompassing. The liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, and spleen are the five yin organs according to TCM, and the other four are the five tastes.

Taoist sages refer to schisandra as the “quintessence of tonic plants.” It is the only herb that is known to contain all three Treasures (Jing, Qi, and Shen), to nourish all five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water), to be fully Yin-Yang balanced, to enter all twelve energy channels (meridians) of the human body, and to nurture all five Elements.

Schisandra has an adaptogenic tendency, making it a potent herb that guards against and aids in coping with a variety of stressors and oxidative damage on a biological, mental, and emotional level.
