In Aztec culture, the seeds or beans of the cacao plant were used as currency and to make a sacred drink called Xocoatl. On a stone metate, roasted corn and cacao seeds were ground with cinnamon, vanilla, salt, maca, and chilies to create a savory mix that was turned into a deliciously invigorating brew. Consuming chocolate as a beverage was an incredible privilege only enjoyed by royalty and high priests. Xocoatl was a known aphrodisiac associated with the Aztec god Xochipilli, who was the god of music, poetry, and spirituality.
