New Year’s Skincare Resolutions
Essential skincare rituals worth committing to all year long
Another new year, another fresh start. If taking better care of your skin is on your list of resolutions this year, we’ve got your back! We’ve gathered some of our favorite skincare wisdom and beauty rituals to help you put your best face forward for the year ahead.
From our most gorgeous glowing days to our worst breakouts, our skin is constantly communicating with us about the ways our diet, health and habits impact our bodies as a whole. Face mapping is an incredibly useful tool for interpreting the “messages” behind our common complexion concerns, providing valuable insights that can help us bring greater balance to our skin and our lives.
The ancient art of facial mapping is based on the theory that different sections of the face correspond to specific internal areas of the body, which are detailed in our handy diagram. Dullness, luster, color, and breakouts: they all tell a deeper story of our health, and can indicate how specific organs within our bodies are functioning. In my years as an esthetician, facial mapping became one of my go-to techniques in the treatment room, enabling me to look beyond the surface of the skin to achieve a greater understanding of any imbalances occurring within. I can still hear my mentor’s voice in my head when I see someone with a pimple on the tip of their nose – “Your nose area represents your heart. If you see a loved one with a pimple on the tip of their nose- just give them a big, old hug.”
COMMIT TO CLEANSING
Falling asleep in your makeup is an absolute no-no! Cleansing the skin is an essential first step in every skincare ritual, and directly contributes to the longterm health and clarity of your complexion. In the morning, a gentle cleanse will do to remove the oils and impurities from the night before. In the evening, we encourage a double cleanse – one round to remove makeup and SPF, and another round to deep clean.
AM: Cleanse with Pamplemousse to gently cleanse and prep the skin for the day.
PM: Double cleanse with Pamplemousse, followed by Kalima Cleansing Powder.
HYDRATE + MOISTURIZE
And in that order! Prep your skin by misting with a water-based toning mist before applying your oil-based serums, elixirs and balms for optimal absorption and the perfect balance of hydration and moisture.
AM + PM: Mist face generously with Citrus + Citrine to brighten and boost, or Bohemian Ruby to help balance and soothe. Then apply your favorite Leahlani Serums and Elixirs.
POLISH AND PRIME
Regular exfoliation will leave your skin looking vibrant and healthy. When you commit to exfoliating 2-3x a week, the results will follow. Your complexion will be softer, clearer, and more even-toned. For optimal results, we recommend exfoliating in the PM after double-cleansing.
For oily / acne-prone skin: Exfoliate with our Honey Love Microdermabrasion Scrub 2-3x a week
For dry / sensitive skin: Exfoliate with our Kalima Coconut Cream Cleansing Powder 2-3x a week
DEDICATED SPA DAY
When we’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, taking time for self care is usually the last thing our minds. But a little self-nurturing goes such a long way for maintaining resilience, grounding the spirit, and returning to a state of calm. One of the easiest and most most enjoyable ways to hit the reset button for mind, body and spirit is to treat yourself to a spa day at home. It doesn’t have to be fancy to be luxurious – just set the mood, gather your favorite skincare products, and take a little time for yourself.
What you will need:
Step 1: Set the mood.
Turn off your cell phone, dim the lights and put on whatever music you find soothing. Light your candle or put some drops of your favorite essential oil into your diffuser. Take a couple deep breaths, and leave everything else behind for a moment.
Step 2: Exfoliate.
Grab your dry brush, and brush up your body in long strokes toward your heart to get circulation flowing. It’s fine to go over an area a few times if it feels good. When you reach your belly, gently brush it in a clockwise motion. Now for your face – exfoliate your skin with our Honey Love Microdermabrasion Exfoliator and feel it deeply cleanse, smooth, and soften the skin.
Step 3: Nourish.
Use our Coco Infusion Oil to create a deep scalp conditioning treatment. With the lid screwed on tightly, place your bottle of Coco in a bowl of hot water to gently heat the oil. Pour into your palm, and work the oil through your hair from roots to scalp. Apply a generous dollop of Bless Balm to your skin before stepping into a steamy bath or shower for a deep moisturizing treatment.
Step 4: Bathe.
if you have a bath, run your bathwater and add 1-2tbs of Bless Beauty Bath Salts into the water. If you do not have a bath, run a hot and steamy shower and apply a dab of Bless Aromatherapy Essence to your pulse points right before stepping in(wrists, behind the knees, elbow crease). The steam from the shower combined with Bless Essence will create a gorgeous, aromatherapeutic spa experience.
Step 5: Massage.
Finish out your spa session by spending a good few minutes gently massaging your favorite Leahlani serum and/or elixir into the skin.
Feeling better? We thought so. Self care is one of the most powerful tools we have to transform our moods and strengthen our connection to our bodies. We encourage you to make a habit of it!
BEAUTY SLEEP: IT’S A REAL THING
Your body never stops working, even when you’re asleep. As you rest, every cell in your body is working hard to recuperate and regenerate. Giving yourself enough time to sleep ensures that your body will have enough for these essential processes of renewal. Obviously less sleep makes you “look tired,” but it also creates stress and a spike in cortisone levels, which can lead to premature aging.
Put your phone down at least an hour before bed to help you fall asleep with ease. A diffuser with lavender essential oils by your bed can also help you to relax and get the sleep of your dreams.
Sending abundant aloha from Kaua’i, wishing you all a beautiful 2021!
