The indigenous peoples of Siberia, Korea, Mongolia and northern Europe have steeped chaga as a tea for generations, and both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Russian folk herbalism have long valued it for its grounding, restorative character. It’s sometimes called the king of mushrooms, though it’s technically a conk rather than a true mushroom.

Why a dual extract?

Chaga’s most valuable compounds sit in two different places within the conk. Water-soluble polysaccharides, including the well-studied beta-glucans, release into hot water. Fat-soluble compounds — the triterpenes and chaga’s signature dark phenolics — release only into alcohol. A simple ground powder gives you neither in meaningful concentration, because the chitin walls are too tough for the body to break down.

Our dual extract performs both extractions and concentrates the result at 10:1, in a form the body can readily absorb.

✧ Where does our Chaga come from?

Wild harvested from the cold birch forests of the Changbai Mountains in northeastern China, on the border with North Korea, gathered in winter when the conk’s compounds are at their richest. Only the woody, mature growths are taken, leaving the rest to continue its slow life on the host tree — the traditional way of gathering chaga, with care for the forest and for the next harvest. We work directly with our supplier to verify origin, harvest method and batch quality.

✧ How do you take Chaga Extract?

One gram a day — roughly half a level teaspoon. Stir into warm water, plant milk or your morning coffee, or add it to a smoothie or elixir blend. As a dual extract it’s best in hot water; some of the fat-soluble fraction may not fully dissolve, which is normal. It can also be sprinkled into hot food or over salad. There’s no brewing or steeping to do; the extraction has already done that work.

Begin with one serving a day and adjust as you learn how it suits you.

✧ What does Chaga taste like?

Soft, earthy and gently smoky, with a hint of vanilla and a warmth that lingers — closer to a mild forest tea than to coffee. In warm water it makes a deep amber drink with a light, faintly bitter finish. It blends beautifully with cacao, cinnamon or a touch of honey, and sits naturally with reishi and the other tonic herbs. Unsweetened, single ingredient, no flavourings.

Over the years in our search for the most vital and life giving foods and herbs (a passion which grew into Na’vi Organics), we have tried many different foods, herbs and extracts from all over the world.

We are proud that 99% of our products are sourced directly from either the growers or producers, rather than through 3rd party suppliers. This ensures our stock is always the freshest it can be, and we also know we are paying the producers directly ensuring they are getting what they wish for their produce. Building long-standing relationships with our suppliers is also very important to us – we are delighted at the friendships we have built with some of our producers and the joyfulness of doing business in this way.

We have sought producers who are passionate about their products and many of the products we stock are unique to us in the UK.

Chinese Sourcing

Until a few years ago (2015) we did not source any products from China due to the difficulty we experienced in finding suppliers with a true commitment to providing a consistent high quality of uncontaminated sources of tonic herbs. We continued searching as knew that when properly adhered to, the precious knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine within China can not be surpassed. They know, through their long history of using and studying their traditional herbs exactly what is required to produce the very best functional herbal remedies. Herbalists are highly regarded in Chinese culture, knowing where / when to harvest and exactly how to process medicinal herbs is a very prestigious art.

In 2015, we were very fortunate to find a wonderful producer to work with in China. They have a very strict sourcing policy and a passionate in-depth knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After sampling their products and getting to know them, we were satisfied by their dedication to clean sourcing, high quality, and attention to detail during the processing involved. With this new partnership, we began to offer a select range of tonic herbs.

Since making a choice to stock some products that are produced in China, we understandably began to receive emails from customers expressing their concern regarding potential environmental pollutants. In response to this, all our products produced in China have Certificates of Analysis available on request and we have also put together a few words in a PDF document that directly address these concerns.
