✧ How is it made, and is it real Zhen Zhu Fen?

How it’s made

Most Pearl Powder on the market today is hydrolysed — broken down using acids, alkalis, or enzymes for faster, large-scale production. This chemical process alters the pearl’s natural structure and degrades the delicate compounds prized in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Levigation, by contrast, is the original preparation method — the “water flying” technique. Pearls are slowly stone-ground with water, without heat or chemicals, until an exceptionally fine powder remains. The original grit is removed, leaving a pure, ultra-fine powder with the pearl’s organic matrix fully intact. Nothing added, nothing destroyed.

Is it real Zhen Zhu Fen?

Yes. Zhen Zhu Fen (珍珠粉) is simply the Chinese name for pearl powder. Classified as a Shen tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it was valued for its calming, settling, and brightening effects. We use the same classical levigation method used for centuries — unlike most modern pearl powder, which is hydrolysed for speed and cost.

Food-grade vs. cosmetic-grade

Food-grade pearl powder is tested for purity and meets the standards required for internal use — free from fillers, contaminants, and additives, and suitable both on the skin and as a daily tonic. Cosmetic-grade pearl powder, by contrast, is intended for external use only and may contain fillers or be processed differently. Ours is food-grade, so the same jar works in your skincare routine and your daily wellbeing practice.

✧ How to use Pearl Powder?

In your skincare

Pearl powder contains an organic protein matrix understood to help signal cell behaviour, making it especially effective when applied directly to skin. Used consistently, its effects compound over time. Classical physicians described pearl as “arresting the face against time” — preserving luminosity and youthfulness as skin matures.

Weekly self-care: Mix half a teaspoon with raw honey, your favourite facial oil, or water to form a smooth paste. Apply to clean skin, leave for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
Targeted overnight use: Blend a small amount with water, or mix into your night cream or serum, and let it work overnight.

Pairs beautifully with raw honey and rose water — a mineral-rich addition to masks, creams, and beauty preparations for mature or tired-looking skin, traditionally used to support an even, luminous tone when modern life dulls our natural glow.

Can be used as a setting or finishing powder for light or pale skin tones
For darker skin tones, blend into foundation or daytime moisturiser to add luminosity without leaving a visible white cast

Taken internally

For internal use, we suggest 0.5–1 gram (roughly ¼–½ level teaspoon) daily. As with all tonic herbs, consider cycling pearl powder to give the body time to process and assimilate it for long-term benefit.

Please note: our Pearl Powder will not dissolve. Hydrolysed pearl powders dissolve because the pearl has been chemically broken down. Traditionally prepared whole Pearl Powder remains suspended and will settle at the bottom of water or juice if left standing — simply stir before drinking.

Pearl’s nutrients are held within a delicate crystalline structure, preserved through levigation. This unique mineral matrix is thought to be especially compatible with human calcium metabolism — making pearl more than a simple calcium supplement.

Our Sourcing Policy

Over the years in our search for the most vital and life giving foods and herbs (a passion which grew into Na’vi Organics), we have tried many different foods, herbs and extracts from all over the world.

We are proud that 99% of our products are sourced directly from either the growers or producers, rather than through 3rd party suppliers. This ensures our stock is always the freshest it can be, and we also know we are paying the producers directly ensuring they are getting what they wish for their produce. Building long-standing relationships with our suppliers is also very important to us – we are delighted at the friendships we have built with some of our producers and the joyfulness of doing business in this way.

We have sought producers who are passionate about their products and many of the products we stock are unique to us in the UK.

Chinese Sourcing

Until a few years ago (2015) we did not source any products from China due to the difficulty we experienced in finding suppliers with a true commitment to providing a consistent high quality of uncontaminated sources of tonic herbs. We continued searching as knew that when properly adhered to, the precious knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine within China can not be surpassed. They know, through their long history of using and studying their traditional herbs exactly what is required to produce the very best functional herbal remedies. Herbalists are highly regarded in Chinese culture, knowing where / when to harvest and exactly how to process medicinal herbs is a very prestigious art.

In 2015, we were very fortunate to find a wonderful producer to work with in China. They have a very strict sourcing policy and a passionate in-depth knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After sampling their products and getting to know them, we were satisfied by their dedication to clean sourcing, high quality, and attention to detail during the processing involved. With this new partnership, we began to offer a select range of tonic herbs.

Since making a choice to stock some products that are produced in China, we understandably began to receive emails from customers expressing their concern regarding potential environmental pollutants.
