What is Vegan and Cruelty-Free Beauty?

When you think of ‘vegan’ and ‘cruelty-free’, you may automatically think of food.
But how can beauty be vegan and cruelty-free too?

Being vegan is more than just focusing on what you’re putting into your body, but also what you wear and apply onto your skin too! Find out what it means to be vegan and cruelty free in the beauty industry and how Evolve Beauty adheres to these standards.

WHAT IS VEGAN BEAUTY?

When a product has not been made without using animal-derived ingredients, it can be labelled as ‘vegan’.

The Vegan Trademark is awarded to products that are manufacturedwithout the use or involvement of any animal product, by-product or derivative, and do not involve animal testing of any kind.

Vegan beauty is important as it ensures the welfare of animals when developing products and excludes them from any unnecessary harm. For the environment, choosing vegan alternatives also lowers individual carbon footprint.

WHAT IS CRUELTY FREE BEAUTY?

When you see cruelty-free on a product, this means that it has not been tested on animals.

This includes both the product and the ingredients in it.

In the EU, animal testing is prohibited on all finished cosmetic products and alternative non-animal testing is used instead like voluntary human tests.

These are better and more ethical ways of testing as it requires consent.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE?

You may think that if a product is vegan, that it is also cruelty-free. But what if we told you this isn’t the case?

If a product claims to be vegan, it does not mean that it is cruelty-free too. What this means is that these ingredients are not derived from animals, but the ingredients or product may have been tested on animals.

Similarly, you can have cruelty-free products that do not test on animals, but have animal-derived products like milk or honey. Because of this, it’s important to look out for skincare products that are both vegan and cruelty-free to be on the safe side!

You can do this by looking out for the Vegan trademark logo that ensures products have not used any animal-derived ingredients and have not conducted animal testing of any kind.

HOW IS EVOLVE BEAUTY VEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE?

As part of our company ethos, we do not conduct any animal testing and do not allow our distributors to test on animals either. Because of this, we do not sell any Evolve Beauty products in countries that require animal testing by law.

We ensure that each and every ingredient that we use is screened to verify that they have not been animal tested since 2013 – this is to follow guidelines set out in the EU.

While all our products are vegan and cruelty free, we are still in the process of gaining certifications so you can shop our products with confidence!

Around 25 of our products have already achieved the Vegan Society certification, and we hope to get the rest of the range certified soon but this takes time. So, if your favourite product doesn’t have the certification on it just yet, don’t worry as it should do soon!

You can see whether a product is verified vegan with the Vegan Society logo. They are an internationally recognised third party auditor that helps consumers identify vegan products.

This year, we also hope to obtain the Leaping Bunny certification that ensures all our products are cruelty-free too.

Protecting animals and their well being is very important to us at Evolve Beauty. This is why we are committed to providing our customers with vegan and cruelty-free products that are just as good.
