Though often called a nut, Baru is actually an ancient legume. Unlike peanuts, soy, or peas, Baru nuts are naturally free from common allergens and are not related to tree nuts either. The confusion stems from the Portuguese word “castanha,” which was mistranslated as “nut.”

The Cerrado is one of Earth’s most biodiverse regions—yet it’s disappearing even faster than the Amazon. The Baruzeiro trees are keystone species, helping prevent soil erosion and flooding while offering shelter to wildlife.
