Creating a Sustainable Advent Wreath: A Dutch Home and Living Guide

Today, on the 3rd day leading up to the Christmas Eve, we would like to share with you how to create a sustainable Advent crown.

The Advent wreath is a cherished Christian tradition that beautifully marks the weeks leading up to Christmas, symbolizing hope, peace, joy, and anticipation. Let’s explore how to create a stunning, everlasting and improved Advent wreath this year that can be reutilized the years to come, together with our Dutch Home and Living decorations.

An Advent wreath is more than just a decorative item – it’s a meaningful tradition with deep symbolism. The circular wreath represents God’s infinite love, while the candles symbolize the light of Christ coming into the world.

Traditionally, four candles are lit, one each Sunday during Advent, with each candle representing a different spiritual theme:

  • First Candle: Hope
  • Second Candle: Faith
  • Third Candle: Joy
  • Fourth Candle: Peace

Sustainable Advent Wreath Materials

  • 4 LED Candles (you could use the Dutch Home and Living Tea Light LED Candles or even the Antique Copper Candles to create a more elongated look)
  • Artificial Greenery
  • Decorative Fake Flowers (optional)
  • Sustainable Base or Wreath Ring (optional)
  • Ribbons or Thread (optional)
  • Other decoration to customize the wreath (the Dutch Home and Living fake berries, moss, grass, beads, globes, bows etc.)

Step-by-Step Creation Guide

1. Prepare Your Base

  • Select a circular base or wreath ring or alternatively go straight to step 2, and create a base by tying together your greenery with thread or ribbons)
  • Choose a sustainable material like recycled wood or metal for the base
  • Ensure the base can securely hold your LED candles

2. Create the Evergreen Foundation

  • Arrange your sutainable greenery in a circular shape, by placing it on your structure or by tying it with thread or ribbons; the Dutch Home and Living artifical greenery is perfect for the job as it is easy to mold into shape and can always be repurposed afterwards. (you can even cut it to your liking or detach parts of it)
  • Overlap branches to create a full, lush appearance; the more the merrier
  • Secure branches using discrete wire, thread, ribbons or tape
  • Add moss, grass or other filler greenery to offer more coverage to the structure

3. Candle Placement

  • Arrange four LED candles of your choice evenly around the wreath

4. Decorative Touches

  • Add Dutch Home and Living artificial flowers, ribbons or bows for example
  • Incorporate subtle decorative elements like:
    • Pinecones (representing new life)
    • Berries (symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice)
    • Cinnamon Sticks (symbolizing warmth and comfort)
    • Dried Orange Slices (these not only add a pop of color but also symbolize abundance and prosperity)

5. Lighting Ritual

  • Light one candle each Sunday of Advent
  • Use the LED candles to create a safe, flickering effect
  • Create a moment of reflection with each new candle

Sustainability Tips

  • Choose LED candles to reduce fire risk and energy consumption
  • Use high-quality artificial greenery that can be reused annually
  • Select decorative elements made from recycled or sustainable materials

Pro Tip: Place your Advent wreath in a central, prominent location where family and guests can appreciate its beauty and meaning.
