Opopanax bomen behoren tot dezelfde harsachtige familie als wierook en mirre, en net als die koninklijke geschenken werd het traditioneel gebruikt in medicijnen en heilige rituelen in woestijnculturen, bekend als geparfumeerde Bdellium. De sublieme boom, met zilverkleurige, afbladderende schors, sappige stengels en stevige bladeren, gedijt in een droog Afrikaans klimaat, op verdroogde rotsgrond.<\/p>\n
