How to Prevent Frizzy Hair

You’d think by now, we’d all have frizz under control, however, it’s not that simple. With all the hair knowledge out there, frizz always seems to be the one reoccurring hair concern for all hair types. That is because frizz is a complicated hair ‘issue’ as it can be created and encouraged without even knowing. It can also come down to the timing in which you apply heat or styling products. (exhausting right?) It often leads to lots of frustration and frizz fatigue. This is why we’ve compiled different ways to stop the occurrence of frizz and flyaways. It’s about time we stop frizz in its tracks and conquer the bandit(s) for good!

What causes frizz?

Frizz is created due to the lack of moisture and hydration in the hair. This leads the hair to attract moisture from the air around it. This is exactly why frizz occurs on humid days. Frizz can be caused by an array of different factors and elements around us. We can go on and on regarding what causes frizz, however, each reason can be led back to 3 main pillars that are responsible for causing the unwanted flyaways. These three pillars are:

1)

Humidity

As mentioned above, humidity causes frizz. But do you know exactly why this happens? When your hair is exposed to humid air, the outer layer of the hair cuticle takes in this moisture. This leads the hair strands to swell and cause frizz. No matter the quality of your hair health, almost everyone with hair will experience some sort of expansion or frizz. It’s a natural reaction and nothing to be concerned about.

2)

Dehydration

Dehydrated or dry hair is another factor that often causes frizz. Similar to how the hair reacts to humidity, dry hair is seeking moisture in any chance it can get. However, people with dehydrated hair see more frizz as opposed to someone with more hydrated hair. Dehydrated hair often responds with frizz when styling with heat or applying products at the wrong time. Dehydrated hair can simply be a result of not drinking enough water or not applying enough hydrating products.

3)

Damage

Damaged hair is always said to be on the more dryer side, which in turn, (you guessed it) causes frizz. This third pillar is an important one because it will require some major hair TLC to repair. Damaged hair strands are rough and contain cuticles that stick up. (Think of a roof with broken or loose shingles). This results in each strand to look expanded, resulting in frizz. Damaged hair consists of brittle locks that are prone to breakage, aka a recipe for frizz.

How to combat

1) Don’t Wash In Hot

Washing your hair in hot water causes the hair cuticle to swell. Resulting in your hair to become more frizzy when it’s dried. Instead, opt for warm water instead.

2) Apply Strategically

As mentioned earlier, it can come down to when and how you apply heat and haircare products. When it comes to heat, only use a blow dryer on your hair when it’s 80% dry. The hot air from the blow dryer can disturb the hair cuticles, allowing for frizz. In terms of styling products, apply all of them (except your hair oil) when your hair is wet. When your hair is wet, it allows for more absorption. This technique will also lock in hydration and moisture before the hair has time to dry.

3) Avoid Friction

Friction plays a big part in how our hair looks. Our hair is sensitive and susceptible to many sounding factors, making it easy for them to affect how our hair appears. Rubbing your hair dry with a terry cloth towel is a huge culprit for not only frizz but damage too. What type of pillowcase you use will also play a big part in how your hair will look in the morning. Opting for a silk or satin pillowcase will prevent your hair from tugging and pulling throughout the night. There is no doubt why silk pillowcases are all the rage lately! Who doesn’t want to wake up with smoother hair? Another big frizz-inducing culprit is your hair brush. Always opt for a natural wooden (or bamboo) bristle that will work in your favour and reduce frizz. Be sure it also has a natural rubber cushioning to prevent static.

4) Don’t Skip on Conditioner

We don’t encourage anyone to ever skip on conditioner. Conditioner is a crucial step in one’s haircare routine. It plays an integral role in how your hair turns out once it’s dried. Conditioner adds imperative nutrients to the hair, as well as protection against frizz. We all now know hydrated hair is less likely to experience frizz because it already has retained moisture.

5) Use a Heat Protectant

If you’re styling with heat, a heat protectant is a must! Most protectants on the market contain humectants (ultra-hydrating ingredients that seal in moisture) Did you know our Rose Hair Elixir doubles as a heat protectant? It contains a high concentration of Rosehip Oil, known to combat heat damage from hot tools and sun rays.

6) Cold Blast

Looking for a quick fix to frizz? Blast your hair with cold air using the ‘cool’ setting on your blow dryer. The cold air will work to close the hair cuticle and allow no moisture to get in. In return, your strands will lay flatter and appear smoother (think back to the shingles). This is one of our favourite ways to conquer the pesky frizz bandit. Add one or two drops of your favourite hair oil and you can kiss your frizzy locks bye-bye!

7) Cut Down on Wash Days

Washing the hair strips the hair of its natural oils, resulting in dehydrated hair. By washing less, you are allowing your hair to accumulate more healthy hair oils that are crucial to achieving healthy and frizz-free hair.

Products That Fight Frizz

1) Sulfate-Free Shampoo & Conditioner

A sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner will not strip your hair of its natural oils. Our Herbal Shampoo and Conditioner bundle is your best bet for tackling frizz head-on. Not only does it not contain any nasty ingredients, but it also contains nourishing humectants that lock in additional moisture to the hair.

2) Hair Sealants

A hair sealant is crucial for locking in moisture and fighting off frizz. Our Rose Hair Elixir contains a handful of humectant ingredients that do just that! The Elixir creates a protective coating to the hair strands, which allow for no moisture to seep in, causing havoc on the hair.

3) Hair Primers

Don’t think a hair primer is necessary? Think again! The Neroli Hair Primer is a product you didn’t know you needed in your haircare round up. This product is to be applied to wet hair, allowing for optimal absorption. It contains lightweight hydrators that work to add moisture into the hair without weighing it down. Not to mention, it also contains protein (Rice & Oat Protein) that is critical for achieving healthy and hydrated hair.
