Especially in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, the gastrointestinal tract is a focus for health because of its diverse and central functions. Nowadays, the topic is more important than ever, because more and more people complain about digestive difficulties, irritable bowel symptoms and also skin problems. Disturbing factors are above all an unhealthy diet, medication, stress or intolerances, which can damage the intestinal flora and contribute to the development of chronic diseases. Today we know that a healthy centre is a prerequisite for our health. Two thirds of our immune system is located in the intestine, which is the true foundation of health, satisfaction and radiance.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR INTESTINES?

Dr. Kuchenbäcker-Schott has written a beautiful text about our digestive system, which we would like to publish today. Here we go:

Let’s talk about bread, milk, meat, fruit and vegetables, potatoes, rice and pasta, cheese and tofu, nuts, cakes and biscuits, ice cream and chocolate. You only need to see, smell and touch the food and your brain will tell you: “hang on, something good and wonderful is coming.

The saliva secretion in the mouth begins, you swallow several times in a row without noticing, the eyes become moist, the oesophagus prepares itself and the stomach gate is already practising a little. The gastric juices increase their capacity. As soon as the first bite is in your mouth, the grinder begins. The morsel now has about 70 hours before it has completed its journey and the rest is transported out.

The teeth grind and the saliva moistens the morsel. The saliva contains enzymes that already attack the carbohydrates, proteins and fats. If you like, this is where your intestines begin, at least with their preliminary work, and here you will also find lots of bacteria that are useful in their work. The taste and smell of the food are reported to the brain and processed emotionally and mentally in a control circuit. The best thing is to concentrate fully on what you perceive NOW. Is it an “Ahhh”, a pleasure, relaxation, stimulation, memory, do you get in a good mood or are you annoyed, disgusted, do you feel rejection? If you were a laboratory animal and trained for this purpose, a ring tone would be enough to trigger your saliva and gastric juice production.

As soon as you have chewed everything well, your tongue, this wonderful muscle, transports the food pulp towards the oesophagus. With the act of swallowing, the trachea, which lies next to the oesophagus, closes with a lid and the food pulp can be hurried down. Have you ever eaten while standing on your head? Yes, you can, just as you can when lying down. The oesophagus transports food to the stomach in waves. Sometimes it goes in the opposite direction, in which case you are sick or the food is bad, so the stomach reverses the sending. The right push is given by the diaphragm. This is because the oesophagus runs through the diaphragm, a muscular separation of the chest and abdomen, and then enters the stomach via the pylorus in the abdominal cavity. Here the food pulp is shaken well, acid is added, further ferments are added to break the nutrients into tiny particles and kill harmful bacteria.

THE STOMACH IS A MIXING MACHINE

Depending on what you have eaten, the stomach has to work hard. Meat, fish and eggs, fried sausages, pork chops, fish fingers park here longer, the carbohydrates slip through more quickly. Perhaps you now regret having eaten so much meat, because “the stomach is squeezing”, the brain reports indisposition, weariness, bad mood. Once everything is well prepared, the stomach opens in portions to release the food mush into the duodenum. Now the work gets into top gear, the blood vessels in the intestinal wall become wider, “the blood slips from the brain into the stomach”, as it is called, enzymes from the pancreas break down into even smaller fractions, the bile helps to process fat. The building blocks of the prepared food are now absorbed through the intestinal wall in the small intestine and transported with the blood to wherever they are needed. Now the heart also has to work harder. Our brain gets tired and longs for a midday nap. “After eating, you should rest or take a thousand steps,” the Romans already knew.

Once the food components have been removed from the small intestine, the rest is transported via the conveyor belt into the large intestine. Here the name already says what happens to the rest: it is thickened, the liquid is extracted, the indigestible parts are fermented by various bacteria. Flatulence can develop here. Now the microbes come into play again; if we didn’t have them, we would be in a bad way. Every person has their own individual microbes that help them do their work.

THE INTESTINAL BACTERIA

In fact, the specific individual bacteria can be partly responsible for obesity or normal weight. This is what studies have shown.
Enterobacteria, lactobacilli, bifidobacilli, Escherichia coli help with the work. If they are missing, we should replace them as soon as possible. Because only in a functioning intestine can vital substances be utilised and toxins be removed. Now we come to the topic of probiotics and prebiotics.

PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS

“Pro Bios” means “for life”. Probiotics are viable microorganisms (living bacteria) that are produced by fermentation of food, among other things. The BELLY BEAUTY CAPSULES, for example, contain a highly effective bacterial mixture of 15 tested viable lactic acid bacteria of 5 billion CFU – that is 10 billion colony-forming units per daily dose – to support digestion and the intestinal flora on a daily basis.

Prebiotics, on the other hand, are indigestible components of food that can be used by the intestinal bacteria as a source of energy – in other words, they serve as food for the microorganisms. In the BELLY BEAUTY CAPSULES, the prebiotics come from inulin, a natural dietary fibre from chicory, to promote the settlement of friendly bacteria in the intestine.

To keep the intestines healthy and the digestive system on its toes, it is worth taking a closer look.

Finally, a few tips from an old hand;

  • Take as much time for digestion as you do for eating.
  • Eat lots of vegetables, potatoes and rice. Sugar and alcohol, on the other hand, promote intestinal sluggishness, while fibre can stimulate bowel activity.
  • Drink 2 litres of water every day
  • Move at least 30 minutes a day (preferably in the fresh air)
  • Try to balance out stress and hectic situations in your professional and private life. Allow yourself enough rest periods, because stress can lead to constipation.
  • Consume active gut bacteria daily
  • Do not use laxatives, they prevent natural stool regulation in the long term.
  • Don’t forget the good mood: a positive basic mood has an influence on our organism and the psyche.
