What is baby neurodermatitis?

Neurodermatitis is one of the most common skin diseases in children. Symptoms that can appear in babies and toddlers include itching, scaly skin or even cradle cap. Often, the signs of the disease become weaker as kids get older and eventually disappear completely. However, it can also persist into adulthood. If your baby has atopic dermatitis, there are many tried and tested tips on treatment and care. We’ve summed them up for you in this blog.

How does baby neurodermatitis develop?

The causes of baby neurodermatitis are still not fully understood. But there are some factors that can trigger or cause neurodermatitis:

Genetic disposition

Skin diseases can be inherited. For example, if one parent has atopic dermatitis, the likelihood that their baby will get the same skin disease is also increased. If both parents are affected, the probability that the baby will get neurodermatitis is naturally even higher.

Allergies and environmental factors

Pre-existing allergies and environmental factors can also affect the development of skin diseases. Babies who have an allergy to certain foods, animal hair or even pollen are therefore more likely to be affected by neurodermatitis. With this initial situation, so-called comorbidities can often occur, i.e. several diseases existing at the same time. If your baby suffers a neurodermatitis flare-up, other diseases can also break out at the same time.

Factors that can contribute to atopic dermatitis flare-ups:

  • Food intolerances

  • Uncomfortable, scratchy fabric on the skin

  • Allergies (pollen, nickel, animal hair)

  • Skin care products

  • Detergents and cleaning products

  • Hot water

  • Stress, psychological strain (for example due to big changes)

What can be done against baby neurodermatitis?

If your baby has neurodermatitis, he or she will suffer from severe itching, especially during flare-ups. In addition to professional medical care, there are lots of things you can do to alleviate the symptoms. Skin care is the key. Our tips are the following:

  • Good skin care: If you don’t take good care to nourish the very dry eczematic skin, the symptoms can worsen. Choose a moisturising balm to rub on your baby’s irritated skin patches.

  • Short fingernails: Make sure that your baby’s fingernails aren’t too long, so that he or she cannot scratch the skin. Cotton gloves can also help against scratching at night.

  • Regular baths: A bath can relieve neurodermatitis symptoms. You should make sure that the water is not warmer than 35 degrees. Don’t bathe your child for more than 10 minutes, so that they don’t catch a cold. You should discuss with your paediatrician whether and which bath additives to use. Always apply a moisturising cream after the bath.

  • Appropriate and comfortable clothing: Sweating increases the symptoms of baby neurodermatitis. So, always make sure that your baby’s clothes are breathable and loose enough. When you buy new clothes, should wash them carefully before putting them on your baby for the first time.

  • Protect your baby from nicotine: Avoid rooms where people smoke and make your home a smoke-free zone. Passive inhalation of nicotine can aggravate baby atopic dermatitis and is also otherwise harmful to health.

  • Appropriate diet: Although there is no diet specifically designed for children with atopic dermatitis, a balanced diet is important, as it is crucial for people with skin conditions. Keep an eye out for food intolerances in your little one and adjust their diet accordingly.
