I started CurlyEllie because I believe that “no more tears” should mean exactly that, for everyone with even the most curly hair. My motivation was the heart break of seeing my 2 year old daughter (CurlyEllie herself) wincing as I pulled the comb through her forest of curls each night.

Her curls were so beautiful but so difficult and upsetting (for us both!) to manage. I turned to friends, family and social media to find the answer.

I would routinely stop other parents of curly haired children and ask for advice on hair care. The only consistent theme in the responses I got was that nobody was that happy with the products they were using. This led me to develop the CurlyEllie Hair Collection.

As well as a product that worked, I needed products that were as kind and as natural as possible, due to the eczema and allergies that Ellie suffered as a baby.

At CurlyEllie we believe we have created custom crafted, high quality and unique hair products designed specifically for sensitive, curly, kinky and frizzy hair to moisturise, hydrate, detangle, define and shine your child’s curls. This is our goal.

No Tears at Hair Time in my house

I am one of a lucky few… I come from a long line of curly haired women. My mum had curls, my aunts have curls and my sister has curls.  I should know how to manage my curls right?
But my hair has been unmanageable for as long as I could remember. Combs did not go through my hair easily and brushes made it frizzy…
It was stressful, trying to work out what to do with my hair as I was growing up. Swimming classes were the worst. Hair up, hair down. If hair got wet, what do I do?

I needed a hair care regime that did not take too long, looked good and most of all, kept my hair healthy, manageable and shiny. No holy grail emerged and so finally, I gave up and had my hair chemically straightened, and so it was for 20 years.

Now I am a mum.

Most babies love water. Mine hated bath-time. Getting her hair wet meant ages washing, conditioning then desperately trying to wet comb a slippery baby as there was little hope of combing her mass of curly hair when dry. Allergies and eczema resulted in a dry and sore scalp that seemed to be exacerbated by many ‘gentle’ commercial baby shampoos. No more tears? Simply untrue, there were lots of tears, both from her and from me.

As Ellie grew up, her hair grew. It was a forest of tumbling tangled curls. Detangling and unknotting her hair took forever, but we diligently did it every night at hair time to save the tears of the next morning.

More tears. This time in the morning, as I attempted to battle the frizz before school.

I set about teaching myself, researching the pure and natural ingredients that could soothe her scalp as well as discipline her frizz, experimenting with haircare routines and learning about texture, condition and how to nourish her tresses and gloss her curls.  I needed a routine that was quick in the mornings (I am not an early riser), fuss-free and painless.  I investigated combinations of plant products such as quinoa, broccoli seed oil and babassu oil and created a routine that not only calmed her hair, but actually provided her with a calm space to share her thoughts, worries and questions with me without the distraction of the Demanding Younger Sisters.

Now she is proud of her curls and her quiet confidence fills me with pride and hope that she will continue to care for her curls, and treasure her individuality.

CurlyEllie is about being proud to be curly. It is about celebrating your curly hair. It is about understanding that you are beautiful and your wavy, sometimes wild curls are amazing and normal. You are a work of art and as nature intended… beautiful!

Boys as well! *smile*
