5 Signs You Need a Scalp Reset

A scalp reset is a term we use when the scalp is needing some extra love and clarification. We put so many products on our scalp and hair that it’s bound to end up feeling exhausted. The scalp is actually skin (but thicker) and needs the same amount of care! Product build-up and irritation are just a few things your scalp can experience if you’ve gone too long without some scalp care.

Why You Should Scalp Reset

A clean scalp promotes good cell turnover and allows for a healthy environment for optimal hair growth. Scalp products are imperative for achieving all-around healthy hair. Think of it as skincare for your scalp that works to remove dead skin cells to in turn promote healthy hair follicles.

1. Scalp Irritation

We would say scalp irritation is one of the most common and first signs you’ll notice when your scalp is needing some extra care. Irritation can be defined as an itchy scalp, discomfort, or dryness. These are all signs that your scalp is telling you it’s fed up with all of the product it’s been handled. At this stage, your scalp most likely needs some extra hydration and moisture to soothe.

2. Overly Oily Scalp

An oily scalp is a true sign that your scalp needs a reset. Overactive sebum glands can be influenced by many different things including stress, hormonal changes, and nourishment imbalances. However, most of the time it’s caused by over washing, or excessive product buildup. A reset will do your scalp wonders! Continue reading to learn ‘How to Reset Your Scalp’!

3. Dandruff or Flakes

We’ve all been there and experienced a flaky scalp at least once. We can all agree they’re unpleasant and no fun. Dandruff can be caused by many different factors ranging from fungal infections or simply not shampooing enough. Either way, your scalp definitely needs a reset and a fresh start. A clarifying shampoo typically does the trick. However, if your flakes are caused by bacteria, you’re going to need something a tad bit stronger.

4. Hair Loss

This is a tell-tale sign that scalp is in major need of a reset. Although hair fall can be caused by alopecia or other sorts of hair loss conditions, it can also be because of a lack of scalp care. When the hair follicles on your scalp become clogged due to a lack of proper cleansing, hair growth can actually come to a halt. This results in the roots of the hair becoming weaker and falling at a more frequent pace.

5. You Overdid it on The Dry Shampoo

This is a given…we all know dry shampoo is a culprit for an unhappy scalp. We don’t blame you! Dry shampoo is convenient when you have to step out of the house at a few minutes’ notice. This is especially so if you’re like us and haven’t been washing your hair that often! We’ve been all about embracing greasy locks because it’s so good for your hair! Although dry shampoo is convenient, that’s just about the only benefit that it provides. Dry shampoo commonly found at drug stores contains toxic ingredients that cause all sorts of havoc on the scalp. These harsh particles get absorbed into the scalp and can lead to unpleasant inflammation and discomfort.

How to Reset Your Scalp

Resetting your scalp can sound a little intimidating, however, think of it as a facial for your scalp. It’s all about getting rid of the impurities that are blocking you from achieving your healthy hair goals. If you’re experiencing any of the 5 signs we mentioned above, your scalp is definitely in need of some TLC.

  1. First, begin by cutting out all the nasty products with ingredients you can’t pronounce. These are most likely the culprit of all your scalp issues. Trust us, your scalp will thank you for this!
  2. It’s most likely the case that your hair and scalp need a good wash with a clarifying shampoo. This typically does the trick, especially for the more minor scalp conditions. Our Herbal Shampoo is your best bet for getting that brand new scalp feeling. This is one of the few products that is to be applied directly to the scalp – meaning it better be scalp-friendly!! Our Herbal Shampoo was crafted with your scalp health in mind. We have formulated our Herbal Shampoo with over 10+ organic herbs that help to clarify and cleanse the scalp.

3. Begin incorporating a scalp-specific product into your routine if you haven’t done so already! Our Scalp Treatment is a unique product that works to gently clarify and nourish the scalp with just the first use! Its gentle yet effective clarifying properties work to reset sebum production back to a ‘normal’ rate (this helps to make wash days last longer!!). Since we’re scalp-obsessed we had to create this product in two different formulations. The ‘Normal Scalp‘ is suitable for anyone without severe scalp irritations or flakes. If you’re looking to keep the occasional itch at bay – this is the product for you! The ‘Problematic Scalp‘ formulation contains additional antibacterial and antifungal properties that work to fight off bacteria causing irritation such as dandruff, flakes, or even scalp psoriasis and eczema. Both of these formulations contain growth-promoting ingredients!

4. If you didn’t know already, Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a holy grail beauty product…even for your scalp issues! Implementing an ACV rinse after your wash routine provides an immense amount of nourishment and clarification to the scalp. It actually works to reduce fungal growth and balance the pH level of your scalp.

Give yourself a couple of minutes to work the scrub into your hair, and enjoy a nice scalp massage to remove the accumulated product and dead skin buildup. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Note: this scrub isn’t recommended for color-treated hair as the baking soda can strip out hair color.

Notes

Finish your scalp treatment with a moisturizing coconut oil, honey, or avocado hair mask or an apple cider vinegar rinse to seal the outermost layer of your hair, the cuticle, leaving it super shiny.

If you suffer from fine or naturally greasy hair, it’s best to wash the oil out with shampoo before hopping out of the shower.
