Living Libations Cacao Absolute is a liquid manifestation of ancient chocolate rituals, medicinal elixirs, and divine chocolate reverence. Extracted from the beans of cacao plants, this absolute is a rich, concentrated expression of all that makes chocolate “the food of the gods.”
Revered since time immemorial, chocolate has a history as rich as its’ delectable taste and fragrance. It was a favorite drink and medicinal remedy of the Mayan and Aztec cultures of Central America, which date back to 2600 BCE and the 12th century AD, respectively.
In Aztec culture, the seeds or beans of the cacao plant were used as currency and to make a sacred drink called Xocoatl. Roasted corn flour was combined with roasted cacao seeds, cinnamon, vanilla, salt, and hot chilies to create a savory, delicious brew. Consuming chocolate as a beverage was an incredible privilege only enjoyed by royalty and high priests. Xocoatl was a known stimulant and aphrodisiac associated with the Aztec god Xochipilli, who was the god of music, poetry, and spirituality.
Cacao Absolute contains three different compounds that are similar in composition to Anandamide, a neurotransmitter in the brain that is responsible for feelings of happiness. Other compounds found in chocolate have been shown to prevent the breakdown of Anandamide in the brain, further helping to eliminate depression and anxiety.
In addition to its use as an antidepressant, stimulant, and aphrodisiac, chocolate was used by the ancients to treat all manner of physical ailments. Chocolate was a common prescription for poor appetite, respiratory complaints, fatigue, digestive disorders, and heart imbalances.
Spiritualty, Cacao Absolute invokes a strong sense of divinity and the sacred. There is perhaps no other pure-plant offering so powerful, and so comprehensive, in terms of its benefits for human beings. Chocolate offers an uplifting, inspiring fragrance that may excite amorous desires and lift depression.
When you add a few drops of this distilled chocolate nectar to a massage oil, bath or perfume, you are opening a direct olfactory connection to pure chocolate divinity; the spirits of the ancient Aztecs and their poet-god Xochipilli are conjured to convene in the ritual consumption of “the food of the gods.”
“Cocao absolute (Theobroma cacao) is a dark brown thick absolute extracted from cocoa beans. Some cocao absolutes are sweeter, some richer, some more bitter, like the varieties of dark chocolate. Cocao absolute blends well with the obvious chocolate partners – mint, orange, vanilla – as well as ylang ylang, saffron, and jasmine. The scent of chocolate has always been thought of as an aphrodisiac.”
